UAAP and NCAA coaches are in Antique to see young players strut their wares in the Palarong Pambansa, and Ramil de Jesus of powerhouse La Salle won’t let rivals coaches get an edge in recruiting.
The postponement of the UAAP women’s volleyball finals allowed De Jesus to take some time off from La Salle preparations and visit the annual national showcase of high school athletes.
The Lady Spikers take on the Ateneo Lady Eagles for the title, but the series opener was moved three days to Tuesday due to the Asean Summit.
Other coaches spotted at the Palaro were University of Sto. Tomas’ Kungfu Reyes, University of the Philippines’ Jerry Yee and NCAA champion coach Obet Javier of Arellano.
A number of top volleyball players including Alyssa Valdez, Kim Fajardo, Jhoana Maraguinot, Sisi Rondina and Grethcel Soltones and Bernadeth Pons played in the Palarong Pambansa.
Valdez and Fajardo were former Region IV A teammates, while Maraguinot from Alitagtag, Batangas, saw action for Calabarzon a few years later. Rondina and Soltones represented Central Visayas (Region VII), while Pons is a product of Western Visayas (Region VI).
The second match of the best-of-three UAAP finals is set on May 6 and a decider, if necessary, will be on May 10 at the Araneta Coliseum.
