MILKA and Mandy Romero had themselves a rollercoaster ride in their first year as Capital1’s co-team owners in the PVL.
Daughters of sportsman Mikee Romero, the Solar Spikers’ top brass both carry athletic backgrounds in football and muay thai, respectively.

As such, even with just seven wins in 36 matches for the year-old club, the Romeros made it their life’s mission to cultivate a team environment built by and for athletes.
“We constantly talk to our players, [ask] what do they feel, what do they think na mas kailangang ma-improve with our program,” Milka said.
“We want more technical, more place, more improvements, strengthening, not only with the new set of players pero yung mga veterans na nasa Capital1."
Mandy added: “We're both former national athletes so what we're trying to create here at Capital1 is a culture of excellence, culture of camaraderie, and of course, culture of winning.
“We’re really nurturing that within our players, that we create a never say die, all or nothing personality.”
A team for and by athletes
In terms of being team owners per se, the Romero sisters bared certain nuances in playing for a sports team that are also essential in running a sports team.
“We learned a lot this past year na you have to adapt quickly and fast. The players are in demand, the teams are very dynamic, so kami, hindi kami magpapahuli,” Milka said.
“We want to be quick on our feet, get the best players that we can for our team, and learn pa rin. We're very lucky na yung players namin talagang very supportive sa new and higher level of playing that we want sa Capital1.”
Their ‘franchise-maker and game-changer’ in Bella Belen has yet to debut in the PVL on Tour as her Alas Pilipinas duties continue.
Even so, the Romeros already carry the hope that they’ll be quick to turn the page on a new chapter with a new leader in Jorge Souza de Brito to take charge for the new-and-improved Solar Spikers.
“Talagang pivotal moment ‘to for Capital1, so we thank all the fans for joining us in this journey and really more to expect from Capital1 as we’re getting bigger and brighter,” Mandy added.
