A near 20-minute pause left Creamline and Chery Tiggo’s PVL on Tour match at a standstill late in the fourth set in Passi City.

In the end, game officials led by first referee Bobby Celso reached a decision to replay the contested point instead of awarding it outright to either team.

Here’s how the verdict was reached, one that was followed by a 7-2 Creamline run that closed out the match in four sets, 25-21, 19-25, 25-16, 25-18.

With Creamline up 18-16 in Set 4, Pangs Panaga’s running attack was repulsed by a block from Chery Tiggo rookie Renee Peñafiel.

Both Panaga and Peñafiel had contact with the net, but the point at the time was awarded to the Cool Smashers. This prompted a net touch challenge from the Crossovers.

A conclusive decision wasn’t reached after Chery Tiggo’s challenge. Celso responded by issuing a referee’s challenge for a clearer perspective of the contested sequence.

The eventual verdict, which came roughly 18 minutes later, was to call a ‘dead ball’ instead.

Why the point was replayed?

It was because upon further review, Panaga’s net infraction happened on the segment of the net outside the antenna. She would also hit the net post upon landing.

Because of this, Peñafiel also drew contact with the net but only because of how Panaga’s initial contact with the post slightly rattled the net and touched Peñafiel.

As a result, both supposed infractions were not ruled as violations. The match resumed at the 18-16 mark with neither team being awarded the point.

Supporting the game officials’ decision was Rule 11.4.4 of the FIVB sporting regulations, which states that ‘touching the net outside the antenna is not to be considered a fault.’
