    Vanie Gandler stars as Ateneo beats San Beda in four sets

    ATENEO overcame San Beda, 25-15, 24-26, 25-5, 25-20, on Saturday to move closer to the semifinals of the PVL Collegiate Conference at the Arena in San Juan.

    Vanie Gandler had 14 kills and finished with 15 points as the Lady Eagles scored their third victory in as many matches in Pool A.

    Sophomore Erika Raagas put up 10 attacks and four aces for 14 points while freshman Faith Nisperos had 13 points on top of 16 digs and seven excellent receptions.

    Ponggay Gaston scored 12 and Jules Samonte added 10 for Ateneo.

    Sophomore playmaker Jaja Maraguinot made 33 excellent sets as Ateneo recorded the biggest margin in a set in this conference at 25-5, surpassing Arellano’s 25-7 beating of Technological Institute of the Philippines.

    “I was telling my players na we have to be aggressive from start to finish. May tendency kasi na hindi naman to relax but to wait what will happen,” said Ateneo coach Oliver Almadro. “In a game like this no matter what, sino'ng kalaban you have to move forward all the time, Hindi pwedeng moving forward, hihinto then moving forward, hihinto.”

    Cesca Racraquin put up 12 points, made 15 excellent receptions and 14 digs for San Beda, which dropped to a 1-2 win-loss card in Pool A.

    Meanwhile, rookie Shiela Kiseo showed the way as Far Eastern University dealt undermanned Arellano University its first loss, 25-13, 22-25, 25-22, 25-10.

    Kiseo delivered 15 points laced with 14 digs as the Lady Tamaraws earned their second win in three games.

    “So far so good kasi malaking confidence boost kasi Arellano tinalo nila,” said FEU coach George Pascua. “Siyempre, knowing Arellano, champion team 'yan. At the same time, 'yung chemistry, kahit papaano, na-achieve na.”

    Ivana Agudo fired five service aces and finished with 12 points. Middle blockers Czarina Carandang and Jeanette Villareal had nine points apiece, while Angel Cayuna dished out 26 excellent sets and scored six points.

    Necole Ebuen scored 15 and Nicole Sasuman added 12 for the Lady Chiefs, who committed 39 errors.

    Arellano star Regine Arocha played in the fourth set despite an ankle injury. Carla Donato is still out due to a hand injury, while Jehan Hussain has a knee injury.

    FEU and Arellano share second spot with College of Saint Benilde at 2-1 behind idle Pool B leader University of Santo Tomas.

    Klarisa Abriam unloaded 12 points as St. Benilde beat winless Lyceum, 25-19, 25-12, 25-17.

    Lyceum is out of semifinal contention after absorbing its third straight loss in Pool B.
