SMART-Maynilad survived a tough Philippine Army side, 28-26, 25-17, 19-25, 29-27, to move within arms’ reach of a finals berth in the Shakey's V-League Season 10 Open Conference at The Arena in San Juan on Tuesday.
Tied at 27-all, the Net Spikers finished off the game following a Nerissa Bautista error, before Alyssa Valdez scored on a winning attack for the win.
Thai reinforcement Lithawat Kesinee scored 23 points despite hurting her right thumb late in the fourth period, while Valdez added 20. Another Thai import, Wanida Kotruang, chipped in 16 and Sue Roces had 10 for Smart.
“Kinulang na naman kami sa first ball tapos na injured pa si Kesinee, buti na lang nakapag-adjust kami,” said Smart skipper Rubie de Leon.
The Lady Troopers appeared ready to extend the match to a deciding set after scoring three straight points to put themselves at set point, 24-21.
But Valdez poured in three points in a 6-3 Smart run to level the match at 27-all, paving the way for the thrilling finish.
Mary Jean Balse and Jovelyn Gonzaga made 15 points each for Army, while Rachel Anne Daquis contributed 12.
The Lady Troopers weren't able to pounce on the Net Spikers' 29 errors as they lost in the battle at the net (13-11) and had lesser service aces (6-9).
