UNIVERSITY of Sto. Tomas advanced to the Premier Volleyball League Collegiate Conference semifinals by beating University of the Philippines, 25-22, 19-25, 25-22, 25-18, on Sunday at the Arena in San Juan.
The Tigers committed 34 errors but went on to score their seventh win in as many matches, finishing off the Maroons in one hour and 26 minutes.
Joshua Umandal led the UST with 17 points on 15 spikes and a pair of service aces, while also making six digs.
Jayvee Sumagaysay chipped in 14 points, while skipper Manuel Medina had 13 hits and made 10 excellent receptions.
Tyrone Carodan scored 12 and rookie Genesis Redido added 10, while Timmy Tajanlangit made 24 excellent sets and also contributed seven digs and four points.
“Sa second set according doon sa data nagkarga talaga ng service ang UP. Tapos ang tagal ng adjustment,” UST coach Odjie Mamon said.
“Hindi agad nasunod ng mga bata ang instructions ko pero noong third set nakuha naman ang instructions so ayun back to business kami.”
“Noong third set, medyo mid-game na naka-adjust and buti noong fourth set na-sustain namin,” added Mamon, who will eye their eighth win against winless Arellano University (0-7) on Wednesday at 8 a.m.
The Tiger Spikers outplayed the Maroons with a 51-41 edge in the spiking department, 8-4 at the service line and 11-8 in blocking.
UP skipper John Mark Millette was the lone player to score double figures for the Maroons, finishing 23 points as his team dropped to 4-3 record for a share of third to sixth places with FEU, Adamson and College of St. Benilde.
The Maroons try to keep their hold of the third spot against the skidding Falcons on Wednesday at 6 p.m.
