UNIVERSITY of Santo Tomas survived a big scare, with Pam Lastimosa leading a huge run in the fifth to lift the Tigresses to a 25-12, 17-25, 25-21, 26-28, 15-7 victory over the College of St. Benilde Lady Blazers on Sunday in the V-League Collegiate Conference at The Arena in San Juan.

Lastimosa scored four in a 6-0 run by UST, hitting back-to-back service aces, to hand the Tigresses match point, 14-6.

The Lady Blazers saved match point after a double block on an EJ Laure attack, making it 7-14, but Jessey de Leon scored on a quick hit to seal the victory.

It was the Tigresses' second straight win after starting the tournament with a loss. The Lady Blazers, on the other hand, suffered their first loss after two consecutive wins.

Mela Tunay scored 15 points, De Leon added 14, Ria Meneses chipped in 12 and Lastimosa finished with 12 points for UST.

UST looked set to end the match, 24-23, in the fourth set but unforced errors by the Tigresses allowed the Lady Blazers to force a decider.

“Nag-enjoy ang mga bata at ang mga tao noong fourth set,” said Reyes. “Hindi naman na-rattle more on sa judgement call na nila ’yun. The intention is good hindi lang na-execute ng maayos.”

De Leon registered six of the Tigresses’ 18 block points, while Meneses had five.

Jannine Navarro led all scorers with 21 points, registering 18 hits, while Jeanette Panaga added 11 for St. Benilde.
