UNIVERSITY of Santo Tomas defeated Far Eastern University, 16-25, 26-24, 25-18, 25-23, on Wednesday to move a step closer to the finals of the Premier Volleyball League Collegiate Conference at The Arena in San Juan.

Eya Laure unloaded 19 points, Milena Alessandrini had 16 and Tigresses team captain Tin Francisco chipped in 10 markers.

Assistant coach Ian Fernandez, calling the shots for UST with head coach Kungfu Reyes working as one of the national team assistants in the Asian Games, said the Tigresses should have done much better.

“Well ‘yun ang lagi naming ina-advice sa mga bata na ‘yung complacency, na kapag malaki ang lamang sobrang (nag-rerelax). May part talaga na complacent sila,” said Fernandez

FEU threatened to extend the match after saving four match points, 23-24, but Heather Guino-o committed a service error and UST went on to take the opener of the best-of-three series.

“All the time nire-remind namin sila na ‘wag tayong manalo sa error ng kalaban, manalo tayo sa puntos natin na which is kayo ang nagce-create,” said Fernandez.

“‘Wag maging habit ang piapalakpakan natin ang mali ng kalaban,” he added. “Merong error point pero mas mainam ‘yung puntos natin.”

Jerrili Malabanan scored 10 points for FEU.

The Tigresses look to complete a sweep of the series on Saturday.
