ROOKIE Imee Hernandez scored 20 points as University of Sto. Tomas overcame College of St. Benilde, 21-25, 25-22, 25-19, 24-26, 15-12, on Sunday in the PVL Collegiate Conference at the Arena in San Juan.
Hernandez had 16 attacks, three blocks and an ace as the Tigresses survived 46 errors and stayed unbeaten in two matches, taking a share of Pool B lead with idle Arellano University.
The middle blocker scored three in a 4-1 run that put UST at match point, 14-12, before Rachelle Roldan nailed the game-winning cross court kill.
Roldan fired 13 attacks and four aces for 17 points laced with 11 digs and 10 excellent receptions.
Skipper KC Galdones had 15 points, while returning spiker EJ Laure made four of UST’s nine blocks, finishing with 13 markers on top of 11 digs.
"Maganda 'yung palitan ng laro. Talagang neck to neck ang labanan namin kasi malalaki rin 'yung kabila,” UST head coach Kungfu Reyes said.
"At least, nakikita mo na 'yung full potential ng team kahit na composed of rookies and sophomores 'yung team namin.”
Klarisa Abriam scored 14 and Gayle Pascual added 13 for the Lady Blazers.
Michelle Gamit had 12 points, while Mycah Go added 10 markers on top of 22 excellent receptions and 12 digs for St. Benilde, which dropped to a 1-1 win-loss record.
Meanwhile, Senior spiker Ivana Agudo and rookie Shiela Kiseo lifted Far Eastern University over Technological Institute of the Philippines, 25-13, 25-22, 25-16.
Agudo had 16 points off 12 attacks and four aces as the Lady Tamaraws bounced back from straight-sets loss to St. Benilde.
Kiseo had 14 points and nine digs.
“First game jitters in positive way naman maagang nangyari,” said FEU head coach George Pascua. “Basic lang. Service receive lang naman e. Kung ano yung kinatalo namin nung first game yun yung winorkout namin.”
France Ronquillo had 10 points, while setter Angel Cayuna dished out 11 excellent sets on top of seven markers as they evened their record 1-1.
Wielyn Margallo scored nine and Khem Consencino added eight for the Lady Engineers, winless in two matches. TIP shares the bottom with Lyceum.
In Pool A, San Beda leaned on Cesca Racraquin’s 27-point explosion and 18-dig effort to outlast rival Letran, 21-25, 21-25, 25-23, 25-8, 15-11.
The Lady Red Spikers improved to a 1-1 card, tied with University of Perpetual Help, while the Lady Knights dropped to 0-2, at the bottom with winless San Sebastian.
