UNIVERSITY of Sto. Tomas survived a huge scare from Arellano University, 25-19, 25-21, 23-25, 25-14, 15-8, on Wednesday to stay unbeaten in the Premier Volleyball League Collegiate Conference at the Arena in San Juan.
The Tiger Spikers labored to their eighth victory, squandering a two-set lead with the Chiefs escaping the tight third set battle and overwhelming UST with an 11-point fourth set victory.
UST came away with the win despite 40 errors, moving closer to a sweep of the eliminations.
Joshua Umandal scored 16 and Tyrone Carodan added 14 for UST.
Skipper Manuel Medina was tremendous on both offensive and defensive ends delivering 11 hits and had 14 excellent receptions and nine digs, while Jayvee Sumagaysay also added 11 markers.
Timmy Tajanlangit made 31 excellent sets and hit four aces, finishing with seven points, while libero Lester Sawal had 24 excellent receptions and 12 digs.
The Tiger Spikers try to complete an elimination-round sweep when it takes on reigning UAAP champion NU Bulldogs (6-1) on Sunday at 9 a.m.
Christian Dela Paz showed the way for Arellano with 18 points, Jesrael Liberato scored 12 and Christian Segovia added 11 markers.
Arellano, at the bottom with a 0-8 card, has one chance left to score a win as it battles La Salle (2-5) on Saturday at 9 a.m.
