UNIVERSITY of Santo Tomas coach Odjie Mamon is not looking too far ahead as the Tigers come closer to an elimination-round sweep of the Premier Volleyball League Collegiate Conference.
UST is currently holding on to the solo No. 1 spot with a 6-0 win-loss record, ahead of defending UAAP champion National University (5-1).
But the veteran mentor wants to pay more attention to the small details rather than the big picture.
“Hindi naman, wala naman (sa isip ko ‘yung sweep),” said Mamon after UST defeated San Beda University, 26-24, 25-20, 25-22, on Wednesday at The Arena in San Juan.
“Hindi namin iniisip ‘yung total number of wins namin, ang iniisip namin ‘yung per game, ‘yung preparation namin,” he added.
Mamon, who manually calculated their success rate in attacks and efficiency in service during the post-game interview, pointed out that they were able to achieve their goal in their match against SBU.
“Like for this game we have to limit Jomaru (Amagan),” he said while looking at the stats sheet. “Oo nga (nalimit namin siya), three points lang siya. Pinabayaan namin pumuntos ‘yung kaliwete (Jeffrey Losa).”
Although UST is on a roll in the offseason tournament, Mamon’s main target is the UAAP Season 81 men’s volleyball tournament in February next year.
“‘Yung preparation namin for this tournament hindi pang Unigames, pang-UAAP talaga,” he said.
