UNIVERSITY of Santo Tomas head coach Kungfu Reyes will miss the remainder of the Premier Volleyball League (PVL) Season 2 Collegiate Conference due to his duties as assistant coach of the women’s national volleyball team.
Reyes will be flying with the Filipina Spikers for their training camp in Japan on Sunday next week and will return on August 16 before travelling to Indonesia for the 18th Asian Games, which opens on August 18.
The Tigresses will begin their life without Reyes starting Sunday next week as they stake their unbeaten 3-0 win-loss record against the University of the Philippines Lady Maroons.
But Reyes believes that his young wards can manage to finish the conference strong even without him as his longtime assistant Ian Fernandez will take charge for him.
“Wala man ako ‘yung sistema andon naman, they know the system, they know the approach,” said Reyes after steering UST to its third win beating San Beda University in straight sets, 25-18, 25-16, 25-21, on Sunday at the Arena in San Juan City.
“Nandoon naman si coach Ian, matagal naman kaming magkakasama definitely ‘yun naman ang lalabas at lalabas sa ginagawa namin,” he added.
After winning three games without losing a single set, Reyes was impressed by how his wards —led by rookie Eya Laure and sophomore Milena Alessandrini — have been competing in the Collegiate Conference.
“So far, so good pero mas gusto namin makita ‘yung kaya naming makipagsabayan doon sa mga UAAP teams,” he said. “Para ma-test din namin kung hanggang saan ang character ng players namin.”
