UNIVERSITY of the Philippines closed in on the quarterfinals and kept College of St. Benilde winless, 25-20, 25-12, 25-17, on Monday in the Shakey's V-League Collegiate Conference at the PhilSports Arena in Pasig.
It was the second victory in as many matches for the Lady Maroons, while the NCAA titleholder Lady Blazers are winless in three outings.
Diana Carlos finished with 12 points for UP, which shares the lead with University of Santo Tomas.
But Lady Maroons coach Jerry Yee was looking for a better execution from his wards despite winning the match in just 68 minutes.
“Slow start and slow finish, sumasabay tayo sa tempo ng iba. The game was pangit, boring, both sides medyo ganon,” said the veteran mentor.
“Ang dami nating errors, kita naman ang reception natin pangit, ‘yung ang joust natin parang iba. Mahirap i-practice ang mga ganyang situation but then unfortunate kapag nandyan na nga tapos hindi natin alam ang gagawin natin,” he added.
Nicole Tiamzon and Isa Molde each had nine markers for the Lady Maroons, who had more blocks (7-1).
Skipper Jeanette Panaga and Janine Navarro were limited to just five and two markers, respectively, after having 14 points apiece against University of Santo Tomas on Saturday.
The NCAA defending champs are down at the bottom with a 0-3 slate but still in contention for the quarterfinals.
