UNIVERSITY of the Philippines turned back Far Eastern University, 14-25, 22-25, 26-24, 25-18, 15-5, on Sunday to move a win away from its first title in the Premier Volleyball League Collegiate Conference at The Arena in San Juan.

Isa Molde finished with 16 points and 14 digs for the Lady Maroons, while Roselyn Rosier added 15 markers and 14 digs, Marian Buitre chipped in 14 and Aie Ganaban contributed 11.

The Lady Maroons will try to finish the best-of-three series on Wednesday and will try to bag their first championship in a major league since winning in the UAAP in 1982.

“The way we started we excited and we were overwhelmed but after our composure we were able to work well,” said UP coach Godfrey Okumu.

“And I believe with today’s win maybe it can motivate us to work on Wednesday’s game,” he added.

From two sets down, UP showed grit and composure to drag FEU to a deciding set and cruised to an early 3-0 lead in the fifth set before widening the gap, 8-3, all the way to the finish.

“The fifth set that was our strongest time so mentally I think the girls did a good job,” said Okumu.

Heather Guino-o led the way for FEU with 17 points, 11 digs and nine excellent sets, while Celine Domingo had 16 markers before sustaining a knee injury early in the fifth set.

Lycha Ebon had 14 and Jerrili Malabanan added 12 for FEU in a losing cause.
