Tired of Farm Fresh’s constant coaching change? Trisha Tubu isn’t

Mentors come in all shapes and sizes, and Foxies' top scorer just wants to soak in all the lessons she could

IF there’s one thing that Farm Fresh has been consistent with in recent memory, it’s the constant coaching changes.

In just two - yes, two - years of existence, the Foxies have had a whopping four coaches spread across six conferences.

Jerry Yee called the shots for their maiden run, yielding two wins in two conferences, followed by Shota Sato who improved their hand by just one win in the same span.

Benson Bocboc then joined the sidelines as interim coach for one conference, but their success as a young franchise peaked under Alessandro Lodi, who catapulted them to a 7-1 record, only to be shortcircuited by eighth-seeded Akari.

Even with their unprecedented success, a familiar scene unfolded, as Lodi parted ways with Farm Fresh, closing the book on his tenure at just seven months.

But if you think that the coaching carousel isn’t healthy for their players, one Foxie has been making the most of the consistent inconsistency in Trisha Tubu.

While a change of leadership may shake up team dynamics, Tubu welcomes the repeated refresh, utilizing those as different lenses where to view and point out her deficiencies.

“Naging advantage sa akin na nakailang coach ako. Every coaches kasi, may iba-iba silang ini-input sa akin,” she told SPIN.ph.

“Kasi apat na coach yata yung naging coach ko dito sa buong stint ko sa Farm Fresh, so malaking bagay yun sa pag-grow ko.

Though certainly not dealt the best hand in terms of team continuity, Tubu isn’t new to fresh starts either.

After choosing to leave Adamson for the pros just after her rookie year, the 25-year-old spiker joined a familiar face, as her Soaring Falcons head coach Yee also called the shots for her new team.

But even when Yee departed after three conferences, instead of worrying about the throughline of her young professional career, the opposite spiker from Tarlac instead saw it as a chance for growth.

As she explained, “May nakukuha ko sa kanila e. So talagang may naka-add ako sa skillset ko talaga.”

While their managerial merry go-round hasn’t necessarily been beneficial to their cohesion season after season, it has taught Tubu to be adaptable, especially on the heels of their best season yet.

“Mahirap siya na na pabago-bago na sistema. Actually, wala kaming isang sistema lang. Pero as a volleyball player talagang yung adjustment, number one yun sa amin,” she said.

“So kung sino, kung gaano kagaling mag-adjust sa mga bagay-bagay, malaking factor yun para sa sa'yo at saka sa team. Number one talaga, adjustment.”
