ADAMSON University stunned erstwhile-unbeaten Ateneo, 14-25, 25-21, 25-15, 25-21, to advance to the semifinals of the PVL Collegiate Conference on Sunday at the Arena in San Juan.
Sophomore spiker Trisha Genesis scored 19 points off 12 attacks, six aces and a block, while making nine excellent receptions as the Lady Falcons stayed unbeaten in four matches.
Rookie Lucille Almonte had 14 points laced with 15 digs and 11 excellent receptions as Adamson advanced from Pool A.
Adamson coach Lerma Giron lauded the Lady Falcons but reminded them of the ultimate target.
“Talagang UAAP kami naka-look forward,” Giron said. “Itong PVL, it’s a good tool and good experience sa amin pero we’re looking forward sa UAAP whatever the result nitong PVL bonus na ‘to.”
Ceasa Pinar, Rizza Cruz and Grace Turing had seven markers apiece for Adamson, one win away from an elims sweep.
Rookie Louie Romero dished out 28 excellent sets on top of four points in the showdown with Ateneo’s Jaja Maraguinot, who had 16 excellent sets and 15 digs.
“Walang panalong hindi pinaghihirapan. Kailangan kung gusto nilang manalo, they need to do extra extra effort beyond sa effort na ginagawa ng kalaban,” Giron said. “Even though yung energy nakita natin bumababa na pero more on mental toughness and conditioning. I think yun yung gumana sa kanila.”
Erika Raagas had 16 points, while Ponggay Gaston scored 12 for Ateneo.
Vannie Gandler put up 11 markers, 10 excellent receptions and eight digs for Ateneo, which dropped to second spot in Pool A at 3-1
