TACLOBAN ended a three-game skid kept alive its semifinals chances with a 15-25, 25-23, 22-25, 25-20, 15-13 win over Petro Gazz in the Premier Volleyball League Season 2 Open Conference on Saturday at the Malolos Sports and Convention Center.
The Fighting Warays labored from a 1-2 set deficit and erased a 9-12 disadvantage in the fifth set with a blistering 6-1 run.
Heather Guino-o nailed three points in that stretch as Tacloban completed a come-from-behind win and stayed in hunt for a semifinal berth with a 5-7 win-loss card in sixth place.
Dimdim Pacres led the charge for Tacloban with 17 points off 15 kills and two service aces.
Team captain Jovielyn Prado had 14 points and a great defensive effort of 12 digs and 10 excellent receptions, while Guino-o added 11 hits.
“Sabi ko lang sa kanila na hindi pwedeng magpabaya tayo, hindi pwedeng mag-relax tayo. Hindi komo lamang,” said Tacloban coach Nes Pamilar.
“Sabi ko nga sa kanila ang kalaban natin less na ang power compared sa first, second at third set nila eh. Dina-drop ball na lang ang bola.”
The Angels had 45 errors, including Paneng Mercado’s crucial attack mishit that let the Fighting Warays escape with the win.
Jonah Sabete had 23 points, while Mercado added 16 hits for Petro Gazz, which dropped its second straight match and hold a 5-5 record.
Petro Gazz returns to action in less than 24 hours as the Angels face BanKo (7-2) at 6:30 p.m. on Sunday.
Tacloban will take a week-long break before facing winless Adamson-Akari (0-9) next Saturday at the Arena in San Juan.
