SISTERS EJ and Eya Laure finally played together after three years as University of Santo Tomas, sharing the floor as UST defeated Technological Institute of the Philippines in the PVL Collegiate Conference on Sunday.
EJ Laure rejoined the Tigresses for this preseason tournament after sitting out two UAAP seasons due to a shoulder injury.
Eya, meanwhile, was inserted in the roster after Ysa Jimenez suffered an ankle injury, paving the way for the reunion match.
Tigresses ripped the Lady Engineers in straight sets.
Eya led all scorers with eight points, while EJ scored one.
“Iba pa rin yung teammate sa teammate at saka yung magkapatid kami sa loob ng court,” said EJ, who last played with Eya in a V-League event in 2016 when the younger Laure, then still in a high school, participated as a guest player.
“Alam talaga namin kung ano yung galaw ng isang tao. Mas madali na sa amin kapag nasa loob kami,” she added.
EJ was still recovering from injury when Eya made her UAAP women’s volleyball tournament debut, helping lead the Tigresses to a second place finish behind the Ateneo Lady Eagles.
Eya won the Season 81 rookie of the year and first best outside spiker awards, but says having her elder sister inside the court makes her a better player.
“Kahit sabihin mo namang madami akong naexperience, iba pa din yung may guidance ka na may ate ka sa loob ng court,” Eya said. “Iba pa din yung feeling kasi merong nagreremind sayo and merong tumutulong para mapanataling buo yung mga naglalaro sa loob.”
EJ, meanwhile, says seeing her younger sister shine motivated her to regain her old form.
“Para sa akin, namomotivate ako kasi siyempre Laure sisters na diba at the same time, nachachallenge kami para ipakita yung best namin sa maramig tao,” the Season 77 rookie of the year said.
“Siyempre alam niya yung weaknesses ko and nandyan siya para icover up, andyan din naman yung mga teammates ko, pero siyempre mas alam niya kung ano yung mga kaya kong gawin,” she added.
EJ added she is hoping to maximize the preseason stint to enter the UAAP in top form.
“Para sa akin hindi naman kasi yun more on scoring, mas (focus) on kung paano ko ilead yung team and si Eya,” she said. “Wala naman sakin yung mga puntos puntos mas gusto ko na (nagaguide) ko sila sa right path.”
Eya, however, will be only part of the team in the elimination round as she is part of the Philippine women’s volleyball team that will train in Thailand.
