POCARI Sweat cruised early before surviving a gritty fight from collegiate team University of the Philippines late to come out on top, 25-18, 25-14, 25-22, in the Shakey’s V-League Season 13 Open Conference at The Arena in San Juan on Saturday.
Skipper Michele Gumabao, Myla Pablo and Elaine Kasilag led the attack for the Lady Warriors as they had 13, 11 and 10 points, respectively.
Pocari Sweat, formerly Philips Gold in the Philippine Super Liga, capitalized on UP’s 30 errors compared to their 15 team miscues.
But Pocari Sweat coach Rommel Abella reminded his team to keep their guards up especially in the third set, where UP broke loose from a 6-6 deadlock en route to take the lead, 10-8, early in the final set. The Lady Maroons threatened to take the set late before the Lady Warriors finished things off.
“Actually nasabihan ko sila kanina kasi naging complacent kami from the start of the third set eh. Sabi ko sa kanila hindi basta basta ang UP,” he said.
“Fresh from the UAAP, mas maganda pa ang pinakita nila sa UAAP so alam namin na lalaban sila. We just kept on reminding them na kung ano ang dapat gawin, the usual, the basic,” he added.
Pocari Sweat joined National U at the top spot with a 1-0 card.
Nicole Tiamzon and UAAP Rookie of the Year Isa Molde finished with nine and eight points, respectively, for UP who fell to 0-1 tied with provincial team Laoag.
