SAN Beda University finally ended its two-game skid after surviving the erstwhile unbeaten University of the Philippines, 25-21, 22-25, 27-25, 23-25, 15-13, in the men’s division of the Premier Volleyball League (PVL) Season 2 Collegiate Conference on Thursday at the Arena in San Juan City.
Despite squandering a 2-1 set lead and playing neck-and-neck in the fifth set, the Red Spikers never wavered, with the back-to-back errors of Fighting Maroon John Mark Millette handing San Beda’s first win after the one-hour, 45-minute encounter.
Jomaru Amagan and Angelo Michael Torres led the way for San Beda unloading 17 points apiece with Amagan also protecting the floor with 18 receptions and 14 digs.
Jeffrey Losa was also instrumental for the Red Spikers with 13 points including 18 digs as well as Mark Joel Decano, who also had 13 markers.
The Red Spikers rose from 10th place to tied sixth place with University of Perpetual Help holding 1-2 win-loss records. They will face winless Arellano University (0-3) on Sunday at 11 a.m.
The Maroons, on the other hand, had a tremendous collective effort led by the 29-point explosion of John Mark Millete, who had 25 points, three blocks and an ace including 11 digs in a losing cause.
But the 43 errors halted UP’s two-game unbeaten run with the Maroons sliding to fourth place with a 2-1 slate. The Diliman-based team tries to bounce back also on Sunday facing the unbeaten National University (3-0) at 1 p.m.
Skipper Jerry San Pedro and Gian San Pascual had 17 and 11 points, respectively. Libero Miguel Nasol had a limb-sacrificing performance with 41 receptions and 24 digs, while setter Jerahmeel Baldelovar made 41 excellent sets on top of seven markers.
