PAYMAYA coach Roger Gorayeb is planning to arrange tune-up matches against other teams in the Premier Volleyball League Reinforced Conference as his team waits for the best-of-three semifinals starts around next month.
At the end of the preliminary round, Creamline and PayMaya emerged as the top two teams and therefore earned outright semis berths, skipping the quarterfinals.
But the six remaining teams –Tacloban, Pocari Sweat-Air Force, Petro Gazz, BaliPure-NU, BanKo Perlas and Iriga-Navy will play in another round-robin quarterfinals with the top two teams completing the Final Four cast.
“One kasi sa plano ko nakikipag-usap na ako doon sa ibang teams na tune up kami ‘yung mga doon sa anim na maglalaro may kinakausap ako na makiki-tune-up kami para tuluy-tuloy ang ano namin,” said Gorayeb.
The outspoken veteran mentor could only sigh when asked about his plans for the next weeks.
Gorayeb also mentioned that he’s not a fan of long breaks that only halt their momentum.
In Seasons 91 and 92 of the NCAA women’s volleyball tournament, Gorayeb’s San Sebastian College swept the nine-game elimination round and automatically advanced to the Finals, while three other teams played in a stepladder semifinals.
The long wait was more of a disadvantage for SSC as the squad became rusty in the finals where College and St. Benilde and Arellano University won the championship in 2016 and 2017, respectively.
In last year’s PVL edition, Gorayeb, then the head coach of BaliPure, also earned an outright semis, but fell short in the Finals against Pocari Sweat.
Diyos ko, last year ata nabiktima ako sa ganyan sobrang haba eh (ng hihintayin),” he said.
