WHEN SPIN.ph asked Risa Sato back in April if a return to Creamline was in the cards, the ever-soft-spoken middle blocker flashed a cheeky grin before delivering the only answer anyone was going to get.

"No comment," she said.

It was vintage Sato, who has long been known for letting her laughs and smiles do most of the talking.

As it turned out, the silence wasn't about a blockbuster homecoming, but instead, a fresh start.

The 31-year-old Fil-Japanese middle blocker is set to suit up for Akari in the 2026 PVL season, marking her return to the league after stepping away to give birth to her first child and seeing her former team, Chery Tiggo, fold following the disbandment of the Crossovers franchise last December.

Akari formally unveiled the signing on Thursday.

"Welcome to Akari, Risa Sato! Ready to bring in her championship experience and energy, Risa will be a huge boost for the Chargers. Let's go," the Chargers posted.

Sato arrives in Akari as the most decorated player in PVL history, owning a league-best 11 championships.

All but one of those came during her storied Creamline stint before she joined Chery Tiggo in 2024, helping the Crossovers remain among the league's contenders before taking a leave to start a family.

She last saw action in the 2025 All-Filipino Conference last November, where Chery Tiggo bowed out in the qualifying round.

Months later, Sato gave birth to her first child with Enzo Joson, while the Crossovers eventually disbanded ahead of the 2026 season, leaving several players in search of new homes.

Her move to Akari now offers exactly that.

New, yet familiar, shade of pink

The veteran middle blocker reunites with former Creamline teammate Ced Domingo, who signed with the Chargers ahead of last season, while also reconnecting with ex-Chery Tiggo teammate Cza Carandang.

Together with Alas Pilipinas standout Fifi Sharma and Jamaica Villena, Sato bolsters what is shaping up to be one of the PVL's stingiest defensive units.

After months of speculation over where she would continue her career, Sato's next chapter won't be written in Creamline pink after all.

Instead, the most decorated player in PVL history will chase a record-extending 12th PVL title in Akari red, hoping to help the Chargers finally clear the last hurdle after a pair of bronze-medal finishes and a silver-medal campaign that left the franchise still searching for its elusive first league championship.
