UNIVERSITY of the Philippines registered its first win with a 25-10, 25-19, 25-15 rout of Philippine Coast Guard in the Shakey's V-League Reinforced Conference at the PhilSports Arena in Pasig on Saturday.
Red-hot from the get-go, the Lady Maroons improved to a 1-1 win-loss record while keeping the Lady Dolphins winless in three outings.
More importantly, the game gave UP's bench the break it needed to boost its confidence in the succeeding matches.
"Medyo okay din kasi di naman six lang gagamitin, exposed yung bench for confidence," said UP assistant coach Monica Ortiz.
Diana Carlos led the Lady Maroons with 19 points including two blocks, while Nicole Tiamzon and Kathy Bersola combined for 19 markers.
Oozing with energy, the Lady Maroons burst from the gates and dumped Coast Guard in the opening frame, 25-10.
But the Lady Dolphins refused to fold in the second set and kept within striking distance, but UP still managed to put them away.
UP continued to step on the gas and raced off to an 18-9 start in the third set on the way to the victory.
Grenlen Malapit paced the embattled Lady Dolphins with just five markers.
