THEY'RE more than mere numbers, and there's more to them than meets the eye.
From important dates in their lives to lucky numbers to mere coincidence, there's usually a compelling story behind the numbers your favorite players wear on their backs.
And more often that not, these stories will either surprise you or make you feel closer to your cage idols.
Here's No. 6 of our Jersey Story series:
RACHEL Anne Daquis is one living proof that the number 13 doesn’t bring bad luck at all.
The Philippine Army standout has been wearing the jersey number for almost six years now, a stretch that saw her win three championships with the Lady Troopers in the Philippine Super Liga and one each in the UAAP and Shakey’s V-League with Far Eastern University.
Also on her list of accomplishments were back-to-back titles in the V-League Season 11 First and Open Conferences for Far Eastern University and Philippine Army, respectively.
“Swerte sa akin ito (jersey number 13),” Daquis related to Spin.ph. “Naka-ilang championship na ako dito, hinding-hindi ko ito papalitan.”
Ironically, ’13’ which is usally associated with bad luck, was not her original jersey number.
The charming volleybelle changed her jersey uniform from No. 3 to 13 only after she graduated from college and moved up to commercial leagues.
The former FEU stunner made the switch primarily because of her birth date (December 13).
“Number 3 talaga ako eh. Noong tapos na ako sa college level, sabi ko level up na rin dapat ang jersey (number) ko,” she said. “So galing sa 3, dinagdagan ko ng 1 sa unahan ... kaya 13, kasi birthday ko 'yun.”
The 27-year old spiker considers the tons of luck brought by No. 13 as God's gift to her.
“Swerte siya, at the same time, birthday pa ni Papa Jesus 'yun (December) kaya talagang blessing,” she said.
