PONGGAY Gaston rose to the occasion when it mattered most for Ateneo-Motolite to force a do-or-die Game Three with the BanKo Perlas Spikers in the Premier Volleyball League Season 2 Open Conference semifinals.

Gaston provided the spark for the Lady Eagles took down Perlas Spikers in three sets, 25-21, 25-20, 26-24, to equalize the series in Game Two of their best-of-three semifinals series on Saturday at the Arena in San Juan City

“I’m just grateful that we finally got BanKo kasi sa lahat ng games na kinalaban namin sila hindi pa namin sila natatalo,” she said. “So this game we really worked as a team and then, we really had nothing to lose sabi namin, ‘All-out na tayo guys kasi ito na yung last chance namin to beat them kasi if we lose wala na kaming chance.’”

Gaston, a former bench player-turned-starter this conference, is embracing her bigger responsibility and she is always ready to deliver regardless if she starts or comes off the bench.

“Siyempre sanay ako coming from the bench so I always get first game jitters starting so parang now I‘m just starting to get used to it,” she said. “But I just have faith in my teammates na sasaluhin nila ako kahit mageerror ako or puntos ko alam ko hindi lang dahil sa akin yun dahil teammates ko.”

“So whether I’m in this first six or second six as long as I’m part of the team that’s already a big deal for me,” she added.

Gaston, who scored 14 points in their five-set loss to BanKo in Game One, shared that head coach Oliver Almadro has been helping her in pushing all the players to their limits.

“He’s not afraid to point out our mistakes even if it’s our point like let’s say misreceive ko pero we got the point, he’s not afraid to call me out or call the other girls out for the errors,” she said.

“Kasi yun nga perfectionist din si coach O. Hindi niya papalipasin yung mga maliliit na bagay kasi what he says is we’ll regret it in the future kasi baka madala pa namin yung mga errors na yun. He really develops the players overtime.”

The Lady Eagles will take on the Perlas Spikers one last time on Sunday, 4 p.m., at the same venue.

For Gaston, they are going to give their all and at the same time have fun.

“We’re just gonna have fun kasi yun nga mga beterano mga kalaban namin they’re gonna use their skills and their experience to beat us,” she said. “Kami naman we’re gonna take it as a learning experience, today is a learning experience, this league is a learning experience for us so we’re gonna do our best.”

“We’re not gonna show up there na mga bata lang kami siyempre we’re gonna try to be tough and just really trust the system of Coach O,” she added.
