THE undermanned PLDT Home Telpad continued its impressive run, grabbing the solo lead with a 25-23, 25-23, 25-21 victory over defending champion Cagayan Valley on Tuesday in the Shakey's V-League Season 11 Open Conference at The Arena in San Juan.
Former San Sebastian standout Lou Ann Latigay scored 14 and current SSC-R star Gretchel Soltones had 13 as the Power Attackers scored their third win in as many outings.
PLDT coach Roger Gorayeb is still waiting for new acquisitions Dindin Santiago, Mina Aganon, Abi Marano and Royce Estampa to join them — the four are still seeing action in the Philippine Super Liga.
But the 10-strong was squad has managed to pull off big wins, and Gorayeb actually used only eight players against Cagayan Valley.
Aiza Maizo and Angeli Tabaquero came up with 13 and 10 markers, respectively, for the Lady Rising Suns, who now have an even record of 1-1, joining Ateneo in the middle of the standings.
Cagayan Valley swept the import-laced Open Conference last year and made it 17 straight wins in the V-League with their victory in the opening match against Philippine National Police last week.
But the streaking Power Attackers proved too much for the Lady Rising Suns, with veteran Rubie de Leon registering all of the team's 27 excellent sets against Cagayan’s total of 21.
The Power Attackers also had 21 perfect receptions compared to 12 of the Lady Rising Suns.
“May pattern sa depensa na pinapagawa ko sa mga bata, sikretong malupit ’yun,” said PLDT coach Roger Gorayeb. “Gusto lang din talaga ng mga bata na manalo.”
And although PLDT did not hold a practice session on Monday due to work and school schedule conflict, it only needed one hour and 20 minutes to finish the match.
“Alam nila na kulang kami, masaya lang ako na nagse-step up sila,” Gorayeb said.
