PLDT downed an import-less Meralco side in straight sets, 25-18, 25-21, 25-19, to start its campaign on a high note in the Shakey's V-League Season 11 Foreign Reinforced Conference at The Arena in San Juan on Thursday.
Team captain Sue Roces and Gretchel Soltones had 14 points apiece to tow an all-Filipino Turbo Boosters squad to the emphatic win.
“Wala kaming import eh si (Lithawat) Kesinee sana kaya lang may coaching job daw siya sa Australia,” said coach Roger Gorayeb, whose team runs second in the standings behind fellow unbeaten squad Philippine Army (2-0).
The Power Attackers suffered their second straight loss to stay at the cellar as Thai import Wanida Kotruang and Japanese setter Misao Tanyama failed to suit up as the FIVB has yet to hand them the required International Transfer Certificate for them to be allowed to play in the league.
Gorayeb revealed the Turbo Boosters never had the benefit of practicing with a complete lineup, the reason why he was very satisfied with the win.
“Ok naman, wala kaming ensayo. Hindi kami nabuo kailan man (sa practice) ngayon lang sa laro na,” said the PLDT coach. “Si (Lou Ann) Latigay may sakit pa kaya ok lang.”
Latigay, the former San Sebastian stalwart, only played in the first set but sat out the rest of the game due to fever.
Paneng Mercado drilled nine markers for Meralco, while Maica Morada added eight.
The Power Attackers though, won the battle at the net, 12-1.
