PLDT secured a place in the semifinals and pushed title holder Cagayan Valley to the brink of elimination with a 25-22, 25-21, 25-22 win on Thursday in the Shakey’s V-League Open Conference at The Arena in San Juan.
Except for a brief period in the first set when Cagayan Valley took a three-point lead, PLDT was in control throughout and matched early semifinalist Army’s 6-3 win-loss record.
PLDT coach Roger Gorayeb was expecting a tough match with the talented Cagayan squad, but instead his Power Attackers cruised to victory in one hour and 27 minutes and kept the Rising Suns winless in the round-robin quarterfinals.
“Hindi ko rin akalain na mababa ang laro ng Cagayan tapos maganda naman 'yung receive namin at ang depensa,” said Gorayeb. “Importante nasa top four na ako, happy na ako.”
Team captain Sue Roces delivered 21 points for PLDT, while Lou Ann Latigay and Gretchel Soltones added 12 and 10 markers, respectively.
Aiza Maizo had 15 points for the Lady Rising Suns, who absorbed their fourth straight loss in the six-team quarterfinal stage.
