PLDT extended its unbeaten run to four matches, defeating Cagayan Valley, 25-20, 25-22, 26-28, 25-18, on Sunday in the Shakey’s V-League Season 12 Open Conference at The Arena in San Juan.
UAAP top hitter and Ateneo star Alyssa Valdez fired 25 points, for the Ultra Fast Hitters, while NCAA counterpart Gretchel Soltones of San Sebastian had 21 markers as the Ultra Fast Hitters widened the gap from the rest of the six-team event.
NU star Jaja Santiago added 14 for PLDT, which needed an hour and 59 minutes to finish the match and hand Cagayan Valley its first loss after winning its first two assignments.
Coach Roger Gorayeb refused to get carried away, saying Meralco could still pull off a surprise. They clash next week.
“Ang Meralco andyan pa, ang gusto ko lang ngayon mag-accumulate ng panalo,” he added.
The Ulta Fast Hitters were in control for most of the match, although there were tense moments especially in the third.
Match officials were split on a Valdez spike that was saved by Pau Soriano.
The point was initially given to PLDT, 23-22, prompting Cagayan coach Nes Pamilar to head to the technical officials’ area and bang the table.
The point was withdrawn after a review of the video, to Gorayeb’s disgust.
Cagayan Valley went on to take the set, but PLDT regained control and sealed the win in four.
Jannine Marciano scored 19 points and Aiza Maizo-Pontillas had 13 for the Lady Rising Suns.
Team captain Angge Tabaquero suffered a right shoulder injury from a bad fall in the second set.
“Iba pa rin kung nandoon si Angge,” said Gorayeb. “Siya ang team captain kasi, siya ang nagpo-provide ng leadership sa court.”
