MERALCO’S import-powered team proved no match against powerhouse Philippine Army, which scored a 25-19, 25-18, 25-18 win Sunday in the opener of the Shakey's V-League Season 11 Foreign Reinforced Conference at The Arena in San Juan.
Dindin Santiago debuted with 10 points in a Lady Troopers uniform, while mainstays Ging Balse, Jovelyn Gonzaga, and Rachel Anne Daquis combined for 25 points.
Mina Aganon, Santiago's teammate at National University also played a pivotal role in the straight sets win.
“Malaking tulong talaga 'yung dalawa,” said Army coach Rico de Guzman, referring to Santiago and Aganon. “Lalo na sa opensa, pag sa practice nga depensa na lang kami ng depensa, ang opensa free spike na lang.”
Army, the only team without an import in the conference, still had open slots in its roster as Jac Alarca and Angela Nunag are candidates to become soldiers.
Thai import Wanida Kotruang led Meralco with 12 points, all from spikes.
