ANTIPOLO CITY — Petro Gazz dethroned Creamline, 25-15, 28-30, 25-23, 25-19, in the winner-take-all Finals Game Three to reign as the new queen of the Premier Volleyball League Season 3 Reinforced Conference on Sunday at the Ynares Sports Center.
Super imports Wilma Salas and Janisa Johnson, who led the Angels all throughout the conference, fulfilled their team’s dream of winning a championship as they stepped up big time in the decider.
From tied at 14 in the fourth set, the locals Jonah Sabete, Jeanette Panaga and Cherry Nunag proved that their team are not just about an all-import show pulling away with a 23-16 spread, two points away from the championship.
American import Johnson delivered the match winning kills that gave Petro Gazz its first championship since joining last year — a huge leap from a fifth place finish in the 2018 Reinforced Conference.
"Answered prayers. These two imports namin played a big role but again siyempre as a team talaga di naman namin makukuha ito basta-basta kung walang help ng locals," said Petro Gazz coach Arnold Laniog. "But the moment na nag-commit talaga sila doon sa goal namin, sabi ko 'Atin na di na talaga papakawalan.'"
The Angels completed a Finals series comeback after pulling off a crucial four-set win in Game Two less than 24 hours ago at the Arena in San Juan City dealing Creamline’s first Finals defeat in three straight appearances and ending its 12-game winning streak.
Johnson was crowned as Finals MVP finishing with 23 points laced with 18 excellent receptions and 13 digs, while Best Foreign Guest Player Salas exploded with 30 points built on 26 kills and four blocks.
The locals also shone with Panaga firing six aces for 10 points. Nunag and Sabete added eight and six markerrs, respectively. Setter Djanel Cheng dished out 28 excellent sets on top of two blocks, while libero Cienne Cruz had 15 digs.
Three-time PVL MVP Valdez carried Creamline with 22 points. Kaewpin put up 17 points including 11 digs, while Sato had 10 markers.
