POWER Smashers snapped a two-game losing streak by beating an Alyssa Valdez-led Creamline, 17-25, 25-22, 25-18, 18-25, 15-10, in a five-set thriller in the Premier Volleyball League (PVL) Reinforced Conference on Sunday at the PhilSports Arena in Pasig City.
Thai imports Kannika Tipachot and Hyapa Amporn led the way with 17 points apiece while skipper Jovelyn Prado added 12 for the Power Smashers.
"‘Yung team work na lagi kong inaano sa kanila, nabuo ulit kaya medyo naging maganda ang resulta namin,” said Power Smashers coach Nes Pamilar.
The Power Smashers improved to 4-4 (win-loss) and boosted their chance of making it to the top two spots, which guarantee spots in the semifinals.
University of Santo Tomas second stringer Mary Dominique Pacres rose to the occasion in the fifth set as the Power Smashers threatened to win the deciding set comfortably, 10-4, before Valdez stepped up to pull Creamline within two, 8-10.
The Nes Pamilar-mentored squad woke up just in time to widen the gap, 12-8, before Jovelyn Prado fired back-to-back points to push the Power Smashers to match point, 14-10. An attack error by Valdez ended the match.
Valdez finished with 17 points for Creamline while Thai import Kuttika Kaewpin and American reinforcement Laura Schaudt had 16 markers apiece for the Cool Smashers, who dropped to 3-5 and bowed out of contention for an outright semis berth.
