NATIONAL University is one win away from the quarterfinals after a quick 25-17, 25-17, 25-18 victory over Technological Institute of the Philippines on Monday in the Shakey's V-League Collegiate Conference at the PhilSports Arena.
NU scored its second win in as many matches, while sending TIP crashing back to earth after its huge five-set win over two-time UAAP champion Ateneo.
Jaja Santiago fired 19 points from 14 hits, two blocks and three service aces for NU.
“Kami naman every game gusto rin namin manalo talaga ganon lang ang target namin as of now every game ’yun lang manalo, manalo, manalo,” said NU assistant coach Edjet Mabbayad.
“Wala naman kaming plans na magpatalo dito basta laro lang kami,” he added.
NU faces University of Perpetual Help on August 17 and will cap their elimination round against Ateneo on August 20.
Risa Sato scored 10 points and Audrey Paran added nine for the Lady Bulldogs.
NU had a dominating start with an 8-1, lead in the first set but the Lady Bulldogs relaxed and gave TIP a chance to gain momentum, 10-4, but they were quick to regroup with eight unanswered points to snatch the lead 12-10 en route to win the set.
“Ang problem pa rin namin, same pa rin as before, ‘yung nagrerelax kapag nakikita nilang lumalam,ang kami ng malayo, ayun ang nagiging result napakadaling habulin (ng kalaban),” said Mabbayad.
NU hitter Jorelle Singh was out for the second straight match due to high blood pressure.
The Lady Bulldogs scored on 14 service aces in a match that lasted an hour and 15 minutes.
Guest player Mylene Paat led TIP with 11 points.
