NATIONAL University launched its title retention bid with a quick win, playing solidly as a team to down University of Perpetual Help, 25-20, 25-14, 25-15, on Sunday in the First Conference of the Shakey's V-League Season 11 at The Arena in San Juan.
Dindin Santiago led all scorers with 12 points for the Lady Bulldogs, winners of the First Conference in Seaso 10.
Playing with no import was not a problem as NU had a balanced offensive effort, with Myla Palbo coming up with 10 points, Jaja Santiago adding nine, Mina Aganon eight, and Ivy Perez and Aiko Urdas chipping in with six apiece.
“Satisfied ako sa pinakita nila (players) kahit wala kaming import,” said NU coach Ariel dela Cruz.
“As of now naghahanap pa kami ng pwedeng maging import at guest player,” he added.
Dela Cruz said they were eying Thai setter Phomia Soraya to be their reinforcer, but she had a prior commitment in Thailand.
“Si Soraya sana ang setter namin kaso lang meron siyang ongoing na liga sa Thailand,” he said. “Hanggang May ’yun baka kapusin na siya. Ang target sana by quarters may import na kami.”
The Lady Bulldogs were in full control of the match, coming up with nine block points against only one of the Lady Altas and registered more service ace (10-6).
Honey Royse Tubino poured in 16 points for the NCAA champion Lady Altas, while guest player Shallane Eniong had only two points.
