PLDT and Chery Tiggo put on a show in their 2024 PVL Reinforced Conference knockout quarterfinal, which the High Speed Hitters won in five thrilling sets, 25-23, 25-27, 15-25, 25-18, 15-9, on Tuesday.
Mika Reyes was happy to see PLDT win; and happier to see the game turn into a showcase of former De La Salle Lady Spikers.
On one end, there was Reyes, Majoy Baron Kim Fajardo, Erika Santos and the still-injured Kianna Dy for the High Speed Hitters; on the other end were Ara Galang and Aby Marano for the Crossovers.
While an opening playoff win was bittersweet coming at the expense of her former Taft teammates, Reyes beamed with pride to see Lady Spikers shine in the pros, which she said is a testament to La Salle’s winning culture and sisterhood.
“‘Yung pinanggalingan kasi namin, nandun talaga ‘yung winning culture na alam mong kahit saan mo sila ilagay na team, mag-bblend in ‘yan,” said Reyes.
“Nakakapanibago na makita sila sa other side of the court. But then again, kalaban sila. After naman ng game, nandyan naman ‘yung friendship pa rin namin na nagkaka-mustahan kami.”
Mika’s stamp of approval
The Baron-Fajardo-Dy trio’s star-studded entry to PLDT made headlines earlier this year as one of the offseason’s biggest moves.
Despite Dy’s ongoing recovery from injury, Reyes told SPIN.ph how she vouched for her former La Salle teammates, with whom she shared the court in their UAAP Season 78 title run.
“Sabi ko nga sa coaches ko, maayos ‘yang dalawa, ay tatlo, wala pa kasi si Kianna. Maayos maglaro ‘yang dalawa at ‘yung work ethic nila," said Reyes. “‘Sabi ko sa 'yo, coach,’ wala kayong poproblemahin sa kanila at du’n naman ako pinaka-sigurado.”
Reyes is pleased to see former teammate and friend-turned-rival Ara Galang rediscover her mojo in the pros at Chery Tiggo.
“Masaya lang din na si Ara (Galang), nakakabalik na at maganda ‘yung performance this conference. Very happy.”
