ATENEO team captain Michelle Morente is gradually coming out of her shell as she takes on the leadership role for the Lady Eagles, thanks to the guidance of former Queen Eagle Alyssa Valdez.
After sitting out last season, Morente has been tasked to lead the Lady Eagles following the graduation of Valdez, but the third-year player admitted she is still struggling in her new role.
“Actually I don’t really know how to be a team captain eh. I don’t really know what to do as a team captain,” Morente said.
“I don’t know pa eh, ico-comfort ko ba siya, namamatay na siya sa training, lalapitan ko ba siya, like I don’t know what to say pa to each member of the team,” she added.
But fortunately for Morente, she has Valdez by her side and she has been seeking advice from the former Ateneo star on to how to become a leader.
“I ask advice from Ate Ly (Valdez) actually, to like help me din, like ‘Ate Ly, Paano ‘to.’ Tinutulungan pa naman ako ni Ate Ly sa team,” Morente said.
With such an accomplished athlete as mentor, Morente hopes to help the team mirror the success that Valdez-led Ateneo squads have done in the UAAP.
Morente, however, admits she is still reluctant to impose her will on the rest of the team.
“Ako din naman ayaw ko iparamdam na parang may leader. May leader naman pero gusto ko kasi wala ‘yung border na yun na parang team captain,” she said.
“Ganoon din siya (Valdez), like we all get along, walang seniority walang ano, as in lahat, but then she guides us through kapag may mali, and she teaches us,” added Morente.
“We’re a young team, so same level lang kami. Alam mo may leader pero same lang kami lahat,” she added.
