MELA Tunay made an early return from injury, joining two other University of Sto. Tomas Tigresses in double-figure scoring in a 18-25, 25-17, 25-23, 17-25, 15-9 win over University of the Philippines on Saturday in the V-League Collegiate Conference at The Arena in San Juan.
Tunay, expected to be out for the rest of the tournament after suffering a fractured nose three weeks ago, scored 13 huge points as UST moved to solo second spot with a 4-1 win-loss card in the round-robin quarterfinals.
EJ Laure scored 15 points and Ria Meneses added 10 for the Tigresses, who are behind unbeaten Ateneo (5-0).
Diana Carlos scored points, while Maria Molde and Justine Dorog had 17 markers apiece for the Lady Maroons, who bowed out of contention with a 0-5 card.
UST had 32 errors, while UP had more miscues with 40 and 10 of the of the final 13 points of the match came from the Tigresses and the Lady Maroons’ errors.
“Everytime na natatalo kami mas marami ang mali naming ginawa kesa sa tama,” said UST coach Kungfu Reyes. “Kaya madami ang puntos na nabibigay namin, wala pa doon ‘yung mismong puntos na ginawa ng UP, tinulugan namin ang UP.”
“Ang importante manalo, kahit three, four or five sets bsta panalo.”
