MARIAN Buitre sat out the last seven months for Petro Gazz ever since she made an obscene gesture during a loss to Creamline in the 2024 PVL All-Filipino Conference semifinals.
There were reports stating Buitre was handed an indefinite suspension by both the league and the team, leading to her extended on-court absence - a claim denied by both PVL commissioner Sherwin Malonzo and Buitre herself.
The 28-year-old middle blocker revealed a rough aftermath where she even received death threats took a toll on her mental health.
That was the reason she took a mental health break at the end of her previous contract which she deemed necessary.
“Aaminin ko na naapektuhan talaga ako, lalo na mentally. Gusto ko lang din i-address na [‘yung middle finger gesture] was not really meant sa mga Creamline players. Actually, goods nga kami ng mga players.
“Hindi totoo ‘yung mga allegations na suspended daw ako, may sanction daw ako. It just so happened na nag-end of contract ako. Hindi na rin muna ako tumuloy because I wanted to take a mental break nu’ng time na ‘yun dahil sobrang daming nangyari.”

With the support of her family and team, she’s in a much better state and is ready to turn the page on a dark chapter of her career.
“Thankful din ako sa mga taong hindi ako iniwan at sumusuporta pa rin sa’kin. Nu’ng time na ‘yun, pinu-put away ko ‘yung mga tao muna pero my family never left my side," the PVL player said.
“Naapektuhan ako mentally pero now, nu’ng nag-stop ako for a while sa volleyball, lumawak ‘yung perspective ko [sa life moving forward].”
