MEN’S volleyball gets renewed commitment from a partner when Season 3 of the Spikers’ Turf kicks off this weekend at the Blue Eagle gym.
The Open Conference of the tournament organized by Sports Vision Management Group Inc. features a total of 10 teams and will now be aired over Hyper Channel 91 and 261 (HD) over Cignal TV.
The partnership will see two of three matches being aired live on game days (Saturday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday) in the afternoon, assuring a wider audience for the men's league.
“Yung first two seasons ang telecast at games ng men’s volleyball laging sa umaga. So ngayon, we’re trying to catch up with women’s volleyball kaya ginagawa na rin namin na sa hapon ito at different play dates,” said Sports Vision director Tony Boy Liao at the weekly Philippine Sportswriters Association (PSA) Forum at the Tapa King Restaurant in Farmer Plaza, Cubao.
“I think yung mga fans ng volleyball kapag alam na nila na it’s different playdates ito at sa hapon din, they will come, watch, and enjoy the games.”
Tournament director Mozzy Ravena and Miguel Vea, head of channel management and programming of Cignal TV, also graced the session presented by San Miguel Corporation, Tapa King, and the Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corporation (PAGCOR).
Past champions Philippine Air Force, PLDT, Ateneo-Fudgee Bar, Cignal, and Instituto Estetico Manila lead the cast of teams that also includes Philippine Navy, Philippine Army, Sta. Elena, Team Fury, and Far Eastern University.
Cignal battles FEU to open hostilities for the season at 11:00 a.m., before Team Fury takes on Ateneo-Fudgee Bar at 1 p.m., and capped by the clash between IEM and PLDT at 3 p.m.
Ravena, a former national player and well-known volleyball panelist on television, said men’s volleyball is just as entertaining as the women’s game.
“There are a lot of good men’s volleyball players around. And on the side skills and materyales, andiyan din naman talaga. Kaya when it comes sa entertainment value, masarap din talaga siyang panoorin,” said Ravena.
Cignal shared the same perspective that it didn’t think twice when it was presented the opportunity to air the Spikers’ Turf, according to Vea.
“There is definitely an audience (men’s volleyball),” said the Cignal executive. “On Hyper, one of the highest rating programs that we have is actually volleyball and UFC. So whenever there is a good volleyball game, you can be sure people are going to watch it.”
Games can also be viewed through live streaming.
“Right now, the Cignal play apps is available to Cignal subscribers, libre yun. So if you’re a subscriber of Cignal, you’ll have that apps for free,” added Vea.
According to Liao, tournament format will have all 10 teams playing in a single round elimination. Top four teams advance to the semis where No. 1 meets No. 4 and No. 3 against No. 2 in a pair of best-of-three series.
