THE Larong Volleyball sa Pilipinas said Alyssa Valdez is planning to go home to the Philippines even in the middle of her stint in Thailand to attend tryouts for the national team.
LVPI acting president Peter Cayco, who met with Valdez last Saturday, said the former Ateneo star bared her intention to join the national team, even if it means going back to the Philippines during breaks in her two-and-a-half-month stint with Thai club 3B Nakornnont.
“She intimated na kapag may break siya, she will join the tryout for the national team,” said Cayco, who is also the head of a committee in charge of forming the Philippine volleyball team.
“In between (her campaign in Thailand), may mga breaks siya. Kahit a few days, uuwi siya para mag-tryout,” the LVPI chief added.
Valdez has signed up to play for 3B Nakornnont in the Thailand league and the Thai-Denmark Super League just before the LVPI bared a plan to hold a series of tryouts following the appointment of current University of the East coach Francis Vicente as head coach.
Incidentally, Vicente once coached Valdez with the University of Santo Tomas high school team before Valdez moved to Ateneo where she became the face of Philippine volleyball.
Cayco said he is happy with the 23-year-old’s intention to join the national squad, saying it speaks well of her commitment to the team.
“That’s good. Very good. I’m taking her word for it. ‘Yung commitment niya, it’s really up to the coaches with regards sa level of play. Sa akin, I’m taking her word for it. Sincere naman ‘yung bata at mabait naman,” said Cayco.
The Philippine women's team is scheduled to compete in the Asian Under-23 Championship, Asian Senior Championship, and the Southeast Asian Games this year.
