FROM a bench player in UAAP Season 80, Bernadette Flora continues to prove her worth as she has been delivering both on offensive and defensive ends for Adamson University in the Premier Volleyball League (PVL) Season 2 Collegiate Conference.
Flora, who delivered the goods for undefeated Adamson, finishing with 16 points including 18 digs and 14 excellent receptions in their 25-22, 19-25, 25-23, 26-24 victory over UP on Sunday at the Arena in San Juan, said that she is just relishing her time to shine.
“Siguro isa na rin ako sa part na aasahan ako ng team kasi ito na yung time ko ganun,” the fourth-year player said. “Hindi ako sumuko na kahit sobra ko na gustong maglaro. Nagtatiyaga ako na makapunta sa first six.”
After playing as a substitute player last year, the do-it-all spiker, who is the seventh-best scorer and part of both the Top 5 receivers and diggers in the league, has been getting more touches as one of Adamson’s main options in scoring.
But she admitted that she is still adjusting to carrying the responsibilities in scoring of an open spiker and leading the new era of the Lady Falcons.
“Mahirap man pero pinaghihirapan naman namin siya sa training namin kasi kailangan namin magadjust sa open, lahat ng batong bola nandun kaya adjust adjust lang din,” Flora said.
Despite holding the second-best record in the league with an immaculate 4-0 win-loss slate, Adamson Head Coach Air Padda was not satisfied the way her wards have been performing, especially her open hitters.
“The hitters, I kept telling them how I’m disappointed because we train you to be fearless,” rued Padda after the win. “You gotta go down swinging, I don’t want winning sets because we’re tipping and rolling to a spot like we trained so hard. I was disappointed in our hitters the way they approach the set (of setter MJ Igao).”
Flora agreed that they need more firepower on offense.
“Kami din naman hindi pa masyadong happy,” she said. “Lalo na ngayon kasi para kaming kulang sa offense may defense kami may receive kami pero wala kaming offense tsaka blockings.”
Besides proving her worth as a player, Flora‘s goal this conference is to deliver a title to Adamson and prove their doubters wrong as they continue to trust the process of vast-improvement.
“(Goal ko) makapasok sa Final Four tsaka magchampion kasi ang daming haka-haka na hindi kami malakas puchu lang kami ganun,” she said. “Papatunayan namin sa kanila na hindi kami ganun.”
