THE highly anticipated reunion of former Ateneo stars led by Alyssa Valdez and Denden Lazaro will push through in the Open Conference of the 13th Season of the Shakey's V-League.
Although current Ateneo players were barred from joining the planned V-League reunion by the school, players who have already graduated are set to come together under a team that has yet to be named.
League commissioner Tonyboy Liao told SPIN.ph on Tuesday that they are in the process of finalizing the details for the team that will be led by former Ateneo star Charo Soriano, who will be playing coach.
Joining Soriano are fellow former Lady Eagles Valdez, Lazaro, Dzi Gervacio, and Gretchen Ho, who stood out in the 'Fab Five' era when Ateneo twice finished runner-up to La Salle under the mentorship of Roger Gorayeb.
San Sebastian standouts Grethcel Soltones and Alyssa Eroa and San Beda alum Janine Marciano are set to reinforce the team.
"We are talking to a sponsor and we are finalizing the details already," said Liao. "'Yung mga current players naman malabo na payagan ng eskwela."
Liao said that despite the short notice, the team is already complete, with Soriano resisting offers from Philippine Super Liga teams to take on the new challenge as playing coach.
"Buo na ang team. Sinabi sa akin ni Charo, iniimbita sila ng kabilang liga eh sinabi na niya na, 'Hindi kami maglalaro kasi sa V-League kami maglalaro," said Liao.
Meanwhile, the May 22 kick off of the Open Conference at The Arena in San Juan will hold no games. Matches will moved to a week later on May 28.
The opening ceremony will be opened free to the public, with fans needing only to present a Shakey's receipt to get in on a first-come, first-served basis.
"'Yun naman talaga ang plano, sa 28th ang games, sa (May) 22 ang opening," said Liao. "Ang mangyayari sa 22nd ay ipapakilala ang players, libre ang ticket basta meron kang resibo ng Shakey's, no worth basta resibo kahit not on the day, first come first serve."
