DRAFT night may have come and gone without Joan Monares hearing her name called, but the former University of the Philippines standout still found her way into the PVL.

Instead of having the door closed on her professional aspirations, an unsuccessful draft night presented another route for the 24-year-old outside hitter.

The Fighting Maroons product remained on the radar of PLDT, which invited her to train with the team in the weeks following the draft. After getting a closer look at what she could bring to the club, the High Speed Hitters ultimately decided to sign her.
More of Monares
For Monares, it marks a second chance that undrafted players hope for.
Under league rules, players who go undrafted become eligible to negotiate with teams as free agents and may sign contracts ranging from P50,000 to P80,000 per month.
PLDT's decision to bring her aboard gives it another wing option to join the likes of Savi Davison, Kianna Dy, Alleiah Malaluan, Jovy Prado, Kiesha Bedonia, and Shiela Kiseo.
