PLDT started its new campaign with a 25-10, 25-11, 25-20 win over Philippine Coast Guard on Sunday in the V-League Reinforced Conference at The Arena in San Juan.
Janine Marciano scored 13 points and Lou Ann Latigay added 12 as the Ultra Fast Spikers took the win in one hour and 15 minutes.
“It was a good start,” said PLDT coach Roger Gorayeb, who only fielded 10 players. Aside from Valdez, the squad was also without Gretcel Soltones and still waiting for the arrival of its import.
Valdez was absent due to the UAAP beach volleyball tournament, while Soltones missed the game as she was preparing for final exams at San Sebastian.
Aiza Maizo-Pontillas, coming off a long break, scored seven big points for PLDT, while Sue Roces and Charo Soriano had six markers each.
“Si Aiza masakit ang katawan kasi tatlong buwan walang volleyball,” said Gorayeb.
The Ultra Fast Spikers registered more spikes (41-18) and, digs (37-19) and successful sets (18-6).
Team captain Rossan Fajardo scored 10 for Philippine Coast Guard.
