YUNI Batista’s conference-high 41 points in Chery Tiggo EV’s five-set win over Capital1 on Tuesday came under unusual circumstances.
Her teammate Jen Nierva shared how the Crossovers went into the match without holding their usual day-before-game training, as inclement weather from recent typhoons forced them to cancel practice as a precaution.
“We didn't practice yesterday due to the weather, so nangangapa pa kami on how we were going to start the game,” Nierva shared.

“We've been playing volleyball for more than 10 years na rin siguro, so I’m just glad we were on the same page today. Hindi namin pinansin na hindi kami nakapag-practice. We all came here prepared.”
Still, Chery Tiggo EV managed to grind out a 27-25, 23-25, 25-12, 22-25, 15-13 escape in five sets for only their second win of the conference.
For Batista, even under less-than-ideal circumstances, maintaining a professional approach through any challenge remains her foremost priority heading into every game.
“We don't need the extra motivation. I think when you are professional, you always have the motivation,” said the Cuban-Kazakh winger.
“You always have the discipline to try your best every time. This is what we do — working hard every day, every practice, going slowly, and trusting the process, the coaches, the players.”
Nierva, who finished with 24 digs and 17 receptions, credited Batista’s consistency and attitude as a stabilizing force for the Crossovers, especially as the 32-year-old ace became just the sixth player in the league’s eight-year history to breach the 40-point mark.
“We're very grateful for Yuni because there are times where we struggle, especially if she’s not in front of the attack line,” Nierva said.
“Kahit anong set na ibigay namin sa kanya, she’s just going for it. Every time, binibigay niya ‘yung best niya for the team. Sobrang laking bagay na we have Yuni in our team.”
