Gumabao, Tots savor Creamline's return to PVL mountaintop

For a team defined by winning, missing three finals in a row is simply unacceptable

FOR Creamline veterans Tots Carlos and Michele Gumabao, this latest championship in the 2026 PVL All-Filipino Conference didn’t just feel like another title - it felt like a reclamation of identity after a season that tested everything they built.

The Cool Smashers were in an unfamiliar territory the past couple of conferences, having missed the On-Tour, Invitational and Reinforced Conference -- not good for a team that has been defined by championships and deep runs.

It wasn’t just a dip in form for Creamline, it was their longest finals drought in recent memory, and with it came something even heavier than losses: doubt.

That context is what made this championship different.

“Super saya,” Michele Gumabao admitted to SPIN.ph.

“Syempre one year hindi namin naramdaman yung feeling na ito. Dami din talaga na pagdahanan ng team, mga challenges, mga injuries na kailangan i-overcome.”

For Gumabao an 11-time champion with Creamline, the return to the top carried a different weight.

It wasn’t about adding another trophy. It was about rediscovering what winning felt like after losing it for a stretch they weren’t used to.

“Ang sarap sa pakiramdam,” she added. “Parang bagong feeling ulit. Parang first time namin ulit mag-champion.”

What made it more striking was how openly she acknowledged the uncertainty within the group.

“Maraming doubts, kahit sa sarili namin, dumating kami sa point na kakayanan pa ba namin ito,” the outside spiker stated.

“Ang dami talagang games na alam namin kaya namin ibigay yung best namin pero kinakapos.”

Meanwhile Carlos, who now owns seven titles of her own, described the same reality from a different angle - one shaped by recovery, setbacks, and adjustment in a league that has grown more competitive every year.

“I think yung mindset namin ng team is bumawi,” Carlos also shared to SPIN.ph.

“It’s in the past already, so focus na kami kung ano yung importante at the moment.”

That shift in mentality became their turning point.

“Maganda yung teamwork ng team,” she added. “Yung coaches, yung teammates napakaganda ng buhat namin sa isa’t isa kasi we know everyone is there for each other.”

And in that season, nothing came easy.

“Iba talaga yung championship na ’to,” the former UP standout reflected.

“Coming from an injury also and yung hindi kami nakapag-champion last year. The teams are really getting better. Mahirap talagang kalaban yung ibang teams.”

Even their preparation became part of the story.

“Sobrang satisfied kasi lahat ng effort namin sa rehab, sa pagpapakondisyon, sa training nagbunga lahat.”

What ultimately defined this championship wasn’t dominance - it was endurance. The same group that once made winning look automatic had to rebuild it from the ground up: through injuries, errors, close games, and moments where momentum kept slipping away.

Gumabao summed up the emotional weight of that grind best: “We’re very blessed na nandito kami ulit, na ma-feel namin ito ulit.”

By the end, the narrative had shifted.

Not from champions to challengers but from doubt back to certainty.

Because for a team that already knows how to win, this title wasn’t about proving they can still do it.

It was about proving they never really stopped being capable of it.
