FIT-AGAIN Grethcel Soltones was happy to repay her coach’s trust as she led PayMaya to a rousing comeback and drag BanKo Perlas to a do-or-die semifinal match in the Premier Volleyball League Reinforced Conference.
The former NCAA MVP out of San Sebastian finally regained her form after struggling in the preliminary round until the quarterfinals due to a couple of injuries and long layoff from volleyball.
Soltones sparkled on both offense and defense as she scored 22 points, 15 digs and 29 digs in PayMaya’s 28-26, 25-16, 25-27, 25-27, 15-12 win on Wednesday at The Arena in San Juan.
“For me kasi ‘di ko iniisip galing na ‘yun eh, I just put my heart in playing volleyball and gusto ko rin na mapasaya ko mga taong sumosoporta sakin,” she said.
For his part, PayMaya coach Roger Gorayeb couldn’t be more proud to see his ward step up.
“Sinabi ko naman, sabi ko sa kanila, tayong mga local, gawin na natin 'yung trabaho natin, 'wag na nating i-asa doon sa dalawang import,” said the veteran mentor.
“Kaya natutuwa naman ako na si Grethcel, bumabalik na 'yung dati niyang laro,” he added.
Gorayeb, however, who was Soltones’ long-time mentor dating back to her five-year collegiate career, believes that his prized player can still do much better next time.
“Pero ako, alam ko na meron pang ibubuga 'yung bata eh. Kailangan lang na tuloy-tuloy lang,” he said.
The do-or-die game of the best-of-three semis is on Friday.
