SAN Sebastian College bested a tired and weary University of Perpetual Help side, 27-25, 25-22, 25-22, for a rousing start in its Shakey’s V-League Season 13 Collegiate Conference campaign at the Ynares Sports Arena in Pasig on Saturday.
Back-to-back NCAA MVP Grethcel Soltones powered the Lady Stags with 20 points for a share of the early lead with University of the Philippines (1-0).
Soltones’ output was one point shy of the combined effort of the rest of the team.
Despite the win, San Sebastian assistant coach Clint Malazo admitted opening day jitters almost got in the way of the team.
“Syempre first game nangangapa ‘yung mga bata. May opening game jitters, totoo sa amin ‘yun pero buti na lang nanalo,” said Malazo, who called the shots for the team as head coach Roger Gorayeb was turned into spectator after going to the venue on street clothes.
Malazo stressed the Lady Stags should have capitalized on the weary Lady Altas, whose core players came straight from a match in the Philippine Super Liga All Filipino Conference over at The Arena in San Juan.
“Kasi maiksi ang tournament eh, ‘yung mga ganyang team na kayang talunin dapat talunin kasi may NU pa kami, may Ateneo pa, kaya kailangan kailangan ang panalo ngayon,” he said.
Cindy Imbo and Lourdes Clemente, who played for Amy’s in the PSL, made 11 and nine points respectively for UPH, while Bianca Tripoli added seven.
The Lady Altas, who came from a one hour and 42-minute match in the PSL, still manage to register seven blocks as against none from San Sebastian.
UPH tied league new comer San Beda at the cellar with similar 0-1 slates.
