THEA Gagate had the last laugh as the PVL’s top two overall picks crossed paths for the very first time.
Gagate’s ZUS Coffee made quick work of fellow ex-La Salle ace Leila Cruz’ skidding Capital1 in a 31-29, 25-15, 25-15 sweep on Saturday.

The 6-foot-2 Alas Pilipinas middle blocker had a quiet eight-point night, similar to Cruz who saw limited action and pitched in just four points.
The experience, nonetheless, meant everything for the former UAAP champion teammates.
“Exciting lang kasi first time nga namin and medyo naninibago pa kami sa ganitong set-up since matagal kaming magkasama nu’ng college,” said Gagate.
“Parang excited pa rin talaga kami sa experience na ‘to sa PVL.”
Cruz added: “Super grateful na nakakalaro ko pa rin si Thea and happy na kahit sa other side na siya, at least we still have that connection na (na-build) namin sa La Salle.”
Lady Spikers keeping close
Prior to their first face-off, Gagate and Cruz shared how they still try to keep tabs with each other’s progress in navigating the new chapters of their volleyball careers.
They might not be communicating as often as they’d like in the midst of their busy schedules, but the former Taft duo still make it a point to be there for each other even as they don their new colors.
“Lately, ‘di pa masyado pero from time to time, we try to update,” Gagate said.
“Happy lang din kami kung saan kami ngayon and nagkakamustahan and nagwi-wish kami ng best of luck sa isa’t-isa.”
