VOLERO Zurich star Foluke Akinradewo bared that she is excited to give her best in the FIVB Volleyball Women’s Club World Championship after the warm welcome her team got during their arrival to the Philippines on Thursday night.
Akinradewo, whose squad will see action in the tournament set on October 18-23 at the MOA Arena, shared to a handful of sportswriters waiting for them at NAIA Terminal 1 how she was overwhelmed with the Filipino hospitality, from the fans at the airport down to those who sent greetings through social media.
"I'm very excited. This is my first time here (in the Philippines)," she said. "I've been getting a lot of messages from fans saying that their excited for this tournament and that's very awesome."
The 6-foot-3 middle blocker, who played for the USA national team that finished third in the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympics, said she will give the Filipino fans the same love that she has been getting and vowed that the six-day tournament will be a volleyball fiesta.
"I know the Philippines is really into volleyball, so this tournament is a very high-level competition. We will have the world's top club teams so they should watch out," she said.
Volero Zurich is one of the favorites to win the championship but Akinradewo refused to be swayed by the expectations.
"We've had almost a month of being together but it's hard to say (our chances) until you play in the competition," she said. "But what I can say is that we have a great coaching staff, we have really prepare for this - me and the girls - so let's see."
Volero Zurich will face Asian powerhouse Bangkok Glass on the opening day.
